CARONDELET CHOSEN TO BUILD PENTAGON MEMORIALS

Carondelet has been chosen to build the memorials in honor of the 184 victims who died at the Pentagon on September 11. The first prototype was poured on March 2, 2005 in front of the memorial design team, construction team and two people who lost family members at the Pentagon that day. On March 3 they returned to see the casting shaken out from the mold—a very emotional day for all. The material used to build the memorial is called Ferralium Alloy 255®.
It won’t rust, it won’t discolor and it will resist getting scratched. MetalTek is the only company licensed
in the U.S. to manufacture Ferralium.

Making the prototype has been a glowing experience for the employees at the foundry. Dean Berger said, “They watched us pour it. It took 48 seconds to pour it. After they were done, everybody stopped and applauded and they were honking horns on the forklifts.”

Each of the 184 memorial units is a stylized bench. Keith Kaseman, the KBS concept designer, said, “You can sit on this, put mementos on it, the name of each victim will be engraved on the end. Plus there will be an individual reflective pool that will glow at night.” Each unit will cost about $150,000 to build and maintain forever.

Rosemary Dillard, who lost her husband, said “Families who weren’t able to bury their loved ones will then finally have something to hold on to.”

MetalTek is proud that Carondelet is playing an important part in this memorial project. Additional information on the project can be found at http://memorial.pentagon.mil/ website.
